The roots of the university were laid way back in 1880 when the Rutherford College of Technology was established, though it gained its university status in 1992. Northumbria University has a huge campus based in a number of cities. It has two campuses, that is, New Castle City East and New Castle City West. School of Law, Design and New Castle Business School is operated from the New Castle City East Campus. The new city campus of the university hosts the campus for law schools, design schools and business schools. The other campus is just 4 kms away from the New Castle and is popularly known as the Coach Lane Campus.
